The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. A group of talented, forward thinking teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools, created the IB Diploma Programme. What started life as a single programme for internationally mobile students preparing for university, has today grown into three programmes for students aged 3-19.

The IB works with 2,740 schools in 138 countries to offer the three IB programmes to approximately 755,000 students. The IB encourages a positive attitude to learning by encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills, to learn how to learn and to participate in community service.

The Mission of the IBO
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The IB Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.

Advantage of studying the IB-Diploma Programme
This outstanding programme offers a rounded education for students keen on university or college. The student who satisfies its challenges demonstrates a strong dedication to learning, both in terms of the acquisition of subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a world of stiff competition. The IBDP is awarded on successful completion of the whole programme, with points score based on results in each subject.

The IBDP has been acknowledged for admission to universities in almost every country in the world. Studies to show how students from the IBDP perform indicate that students who have completed the course tend to be more accomplished in the higher skills necessary for advanced study as this curriculum encourages critical and independent thinking.

Core elements of the Diploma Programme
IBDP students study three subjects at ‘Higher Level’ (HL) and three at ‘Standard Level’ (SL). They study HL subjects for a greater number of hours (240 teaching hours) and in greater depth than SL subjects (150 teaching hours); thus, the IBDP student combines a broad education with detailed study.

The curriculum is modelled by a hexagon with six academic areas surrounding the three core requirements:

Over the course of the two-year programme, students:
study six subjects chosen from the six subject groups
complete an extended essay
follow a theory of knowledge course (TOK)
participate in creativity, action, service (CAS)

The three core requirements of the curriculum
Extended essay: The extended essay has a set limit of 4,000 words. It offers the occasion to examine a topic of personal interest, and enables students with the autonomous research and writing skills expected at university.
Theory of knowledge (TOK): The interdisciplinary TOK course is intended to provide consistency by exploring the nature of knowledge across disciplines, encouraging an admiration of other cultural perspectives.
Creativity, action, service (CAS): Participation in the school’s CAS programme encourages students to be involved in artistic passions, sports and community service work, thus nurturing students’ consciousness and enjoyment of life outside the scholastic pitch.

The IBO stresses that the learner needs to be at the centre of learning and so over the three programmes that the IBO conducts, the IB Learner Profile reflects the IB mission statement that is put into action.

IB learners strive to be: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective.
